As we come to the end of 2017 I wanted to take a look through the lenses that Fujifilm has release during 2017! It”s been quite the year for Fujifilm with the release of the GFX system and several new X series lenses. To keep things simple, I will split my overview into two separate articles. Part one will cover the X series lenses, and part two will cover the GFX lenses.
Taking a look at the Fuji X series roadmap we can see that two 2017 was a bit of a light year of lens releases, this is probably due to the large number of 2016 releases. Regardless, there are still two very notable lenses that were released in 2017, the Fujinon XF 50mm F2 R WR and the Fujinon XF 80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro, two much-needed and well-respected lenses.
Fujinon XF 50mm F2 R WR
The 50mm f2 WR is the third addition to a series of lenses that Fuji users have nicknamed the “Fujichrons” as an homage to Leica’s f2 Summicron line of lenses. These lenses really hit the spot for many Fuji users because of their lightweight, compact design that includes weather resistance and spectacular optics! But what you really should be looking at when considering this lens is the absolutely tiny form factor. Even with the hood, it fits in the palm of your hand and will take up almost no room in your bag. So if you’re looking for a fast, lightweight alternative to the 56mm f1.2, this is your lens!
Fujinon XF 80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro
I have personally been waiting for this lens since the 60mm f2.4 came onto the market. For those of you that have had the misfortune of using the 60mm f2.4, you will know that the autofocus was unusable and it did not achieve a 1:1 magnification factor. Slow, inaccurate, but with spectacular optics, this lens could bring you on a roller coaster of emotions on every shoot. But this is where the 80mm comes in, it has fast accurate autofocus, weather sealing, and 1:1 magnification, essentially replacing the need for the 60mm. I have even heard of people using it for portraiture and sports due to its sharpness and quick autofocus.
So that concludes the 2017 additions to the X series of lenses. Check back soon as I will be doing part two which will take a look at the GFX system!
